Mentoring Young Adults through a Cross-Cultural Assignment
YAMEN! puts emphasis on developing young leaders in Anabaptist churches around the world though cross-cultural experience, training and mentoring relationships, personal reflection and study. MCC encourages the sending church to identify a mentor prior to sending a participant into a cross-cultural exchange.
The mentor should
- be a person who is a respected member of the local church
- have some cross-cultural experience
The mentor will
- support the participant during the preparations for the cross-cultural assignment
- be part of the pre assignment orientation
- stay in touch with the participant during the cross-cultural outreach
- help to keep the sending church informed about the participant during outreach
- assign the participant literature to read and continue a written discussion on the topics included in the readings in a monthly communication
- follow up on the experiences and the personal and spiritual well being of the participant through the process of personal reflection
- be part of the re-entry process
- stay in touch with the participant after her/his return
