Sudan Web Campaign

Ideas for Letter Writing Campaigns

Each of the four themed handouts below correspond to one of the four “asks” of the Waging Peace in Sudan campaign. You can use these handouts in several ways:

  • As bulletin inserts or posters to advertise the campaign
  • To send with letters (see a sample letter) to Congressional offices as an eye-catching device
  • To use as monthly or quarterly themes in your advocacy campaign

For example, for the first quarter of the year, your congregation could start with the theme, “The Pen is Mightier than the Sword.” You could use the corresponding posters and bulletin inserts to advertise the theme. For an advocacy activity, youth and/or adults could decorate pens to send to Congress along with letters (the letters should include all asks, not just the one corresponding to the theme). Below are additional ideas for each of the themes.

Ideas for Advocacy Activities Around the Four Themes:

Rebuild

“What’s Needed to Rebuild Communities Shattered by War?”

Have adults and/or youth take photos of their own town and cut out pictures of homes, schools, hospitals, clinics, and roads. Write messages on each such as “needed” or assemble into a collage with a message such as, “The people of southern Sudan want to return home but need more schools, clinics, roads, and jobs. Will you help?” Include these pictures along with the letters and handouts that you send to Congressional offices.

Pen

“The Pen is Mightier than the Sword”

Have adults and/or youth decorate pens with peace messages and symbols. Send the pens along with the letters and handouts to Congressional offices.

Pieces

“Putting the Pieces Together”

Have adults and/or youth make hand-made puzzles from different images – from photos of Sudan, maps, images of peace, etc. Send these puzzle pieces with letters and handouts to Congressional offices.

Longing

“Longing to Go Home”

Have adults and/or youth cut out human figures from paper, or a string of human figures holding hands. Send these with letters and handouts to Congressional offices.

If your congregation comes up with additional ideas, please share them with other congregations.
