Pan y Paz (Bread & Peace)

International Day of Peace, Nonviolence and Ceasefire - September 21

Letter to North American Churches

June 6, 2007
Bogotá, Colombia

Dear Brothers and Sisters in North America:

Warm greetings to you on behalf of the church in Colombia. The International Days of Prayer and Action for peace in Colombia on May 20 and 21 were very successful this year thanks to your participation in this important event. We are pleased to report that more then 350 churches in North America lifted up the country of Colombia to God, and also participated in actions and events asking their governments for a change in regards to policy towards Colombia that supports violence and the armed conflict.

The support and solidarity of the North American churches has been very significant and meaningful for the churches in Colombia as they work for the construction of a just peace. As a result of your solidarity the voices of the Colombian church were heard throughout North America and in the governments of the United States and Canada, where many times their voices are silenced. The churches of Colombia felt your prayers and solidarity with them through this event, and know that they are not alone in the struggle to bring the gospel of peace to Colombia. We pray that God will continue to work in mighty and powerful ways both here in Colombia and in North America as well.

Once again we are extending an invitation and asking for your support and solidarity as we observe the UN International Day of Peace, Nonviolence, and Ceasefire on September 21st . On this day churches throughout Colombia engage in events called Pan y Paz (Bread and Peace) to promote just economic distribution and peace with justice in Colombia. We invite churches in North America to also organize and participate in events that will draw attention to the connection of a just economic distribution of resources and peace in Colombia. As a result of these numerous events throughout Colombia the Colombian churches voices are heard clearly articulating the relationship between justice and peace. We invite you to do the same in your country.

During the last five years of this event many important and lasting results have been achieved by the churches, both political and social. Nevertheless, the churches face many difficult challenges that impede their important and necessary work.

Please see the information attached to this e-mail to find out more about Pan y Paz, how you can support the Colombian churches as they work in the construction of a peace with economic justice, and how your church can stand in solidarity with the Colombian church.

Colombian churches have been incredibly blessed by the solidarity and support of their brothers and sisters in Christ in North America. Once again the Colombian church is calling on the churches in North America to stand and support them as they celebrate Pan y Paz to commemorate the International Day of Peace, Nonviolence, and Ceasefire.

Thank you for your interest and commitment to the church in Colombia as they work to be a voice that brings a message of hope, peace, and economic justice to Colombia.

Blessings,

Pan y Paz Coalition of Colombia
