A. Loss of eligibility for all federal education benefits
Young men who do not register with Selective Service are not eligible for federal education benefits, federal job training, or federal employment. A maximum penalty of 5 years in jail and a $250,000 fine is permissible by law, but there have been no prosecutions for many years. Some state benefits are also denied to non-registrants.
Many states are now introducing laws which link registration with Selective Service with driver's license applications.
