A. Punishment for soldiers and conscientious objectors during WW I by the British Army

Archibald Baxter, a conscientious objector from New Zealand during WW I, was given No. 1 Field Punishment by the British, in an attempt to force him to fight in the war. Baxter was tied to a forward leaning pole at the feet, knees, and arms, with his arms wrapped high around the back of the pole. He was left hanging there for hours every day.
