B. 2,500

Roughly 2500 soldiers applied for conscientious objector status around the time of the Gulf War. Many young people enter the military for education and training benefits, with little thought about the possibility of being called to fight in a war. When face to face with the reality of war, some discover that they do have deep convictions against killing.
