Male immigrants between the ages of 18 and 26 are required to register with Selective Service, but in the event of a draft, they may apply for and receive conscientious objector status.

All immigrants who are conscientious objectors to war may take an alternative oath of allegiance which commits them to “perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by law”, rather than “to bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law.” This provision was clarified by a Supreme Court ruling in 1955, in the favor of Art Jost, a Mennonite immigrant to the U.S. from Canada.
