About the United Nations

The UN is a set of international institutions established after World War II to resolve threats to peace through negotiation and to promote the sustainable, holistic development of every society.

It was not intended to replace national governments with a world government but to foster cooperation and interdependence among them.

According to its charter, the UN was created for four reasons:

  • to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war
  • to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights
  • to establish conditions under which justice can be maintained
  • to promote better standards of life for all
