MCC in UkraineEurope Community DevelopmentIn Zaporozhye, MCC has been assisting local economic development by turning church-based loan funds into officially registered credit unions. In Donetsk, an MCC worker is helping one university with local income generation projects and at another university, MCC is supporting a Canadian couple who are working to develop social work curriculum throughout Ukraine. MCC also offers scholarships to cover the tuition costs of some students at universities throughout Ukraine. MCC's Global Family Program supports two projects in Ukraine. The first, Good Shepherd Shelter, is located in Makeevka. It is a rehabilitation centre for street children. The second, located in Priazovskye, is a Christian home and school called House of Hope. Whenever possible, children are reunited with their families. MCC grants in Ukraine also support a drug-rehabilitation centre, a home for the elderly, and a family counseling centre. PeaceMCC supports the Odessa Regional Mediation Group, which invites the government to seek restorative approaches in dealing with juvenile and criminal conflicts. MCC workers are teaching courses a Ukrainian Christian College and Bible School and have trained local volunteers to conduct mediation programs in the country's public school system. ReliefMCC supporters have helped to send several containers of material aid to Ukraine. These include medical supplies, canned meat, kits, blankets and other items. One such container, containing meat and clothing, arrived at an MCC-supported university to assist employees and students at Christmas 2004. |
