Using natural body-brain processes

All of the techniques listed above work best in conjunction with knowledge about how the body and brain respond to trauma. These responses are summarized in the Causes and Effects section. Particular ways in which this knowledge can be put to use, for all ages, include:

  • Providing education on how the brain and body function under extreme stress and trauma
  • Allowing and providing support for normal physical expressions of trauma, such as crying and shaking
  • Promoting participation in mind-body practices that calm the brain and body, such as yoga, aerobic exercise and mediation
  • Organizing activities that release tension: sports, dance, drumming circles, singing
  • Deliberately incorporating tension-releasing mind-body exercises into group activities when conflict is present
  • Learning nonviolent conflict management skills

This is a cursory list of tools used in community trauma healing. See the Additional Information and Resources section of this Web site for a selection of more in-depth readings, plus links to related Web sites, handbooks and excellent training programs.
