In 1994, concern was expressed over Christmas hampers delivered each year to needy families in the core areas of Winnipeg. The hampers were filled with supplies purchased from outside the area and did little to promote local economy. In partnership with MCC, the Christmas LITE project began.

New business painting a picture of opportunity
A new venture in the struggling Maritime provinces of Canada proposes to use art to foster economic development. Maritime Art and Frames, developed by MCC partner Island Business Ministries, plans to manufacture picture frames and market the finished products to retail and gift shops in the region.

MCC has openings for development workers in various locations around the world. MCC works with the community and church groups to confront issues of insufficient food, unsafe water, environmental degradation, inadequate education and health care. MCC workers offer their ideas and skills to accomplish the goals set by these groups.

Conflict mediation restores broken relationships
Located in Toronto, Ontario, CMS-D began in 1986 as a partner of MCC. The goal of CMS-D is to empower community members to deal positively with conflicts on their own. An 85 per cent increase in the number of mediations over the past two years suggests that people are choosing peacemaking alternatives.

Forgotten MCC project for Interlake raises $20,000
Last fall, Delmer Kornelsen, one of the key members of the Interlake Emergency Farmers Fund, called up Ken Reddig, executive director of MCC Manitoba, wondering what to do with more than $20,000 raised from scraper rentals. What scraper rentals? At the time, Kornelsen's query elicited puzzled looks in the MCC Manitoba office, but slowly Reddig pieced together the details of the forgotten project.
