GreenhousesGreenhouses give refugee families a new start
Hundreds of thousands of refugees fled to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, during the wars of the 1990s. As the city continues to struggle under the weight of this population growth, many refugee families still rely on aid because they cannot find work. MCC and Bread of Life, a local church-based organization, have provided tools to help refugees in Belgrade make a new start and provide food for their families. Last year Rada Tarbuk and her family received a greenhouse in which they now grow lettuce, radishes and spinach. The Tarbuks owned a 20-hectare farm in their home country, Croatia, that produced "so many potatoes, grapes and plums we could not count them," says Milan, Rada's husband. The family fled war in Croatia in 1992 and settled much later in a small town outside of Belgrade. They were unable to find steady work until Bread of Life provided the greenhouse. Rada and Milan attended classes on greenhouse use and maintenance at the Bread of Life office. They now sell most of their greenhouse vegetables in local markets but give 10 percent of the vegetables to a children's home, as required by Bread of Life. Forty refugee families in the Belgrade area have received greenhouses, while many others have chosen chickens, goats or sewing machines from Bread of Life as a means of starting over.
