MCC in TanzaniaAfrica MCC, which has traditionally focused on education in Tanzania, now also concentrates its work in HIV/AIDS and community development, often in partnership with the Tanzanian Mennonite church. Its work is primarily in the northern half of the country. MCC supports partner organizations that respond to HIV/AIDS by holding support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS, educating community members, providing voluntary counseling and testing, providing home-based care and supporting families caring for orphans. MCC AIDS care kits have also been distributed in Tanzania. MCC provides funds to care for orphans in Dodoma through the Global Family sponsorship program and also supports nursery schools. MCC also provides teachers for institutions, including the Mennonite Theological College of East Africa. MCC, through a small grants program with the Tanzanian Mennonite Church, has supported numerous training seminars on topics including leadership development, women’s issues and how organizations can enhance their ability to respond to the community around them. Young people from Tanzania travel to the United States or Canada through MCC’s International Volunteer Exchange Program (IVEP), and through the Serving and Learning Together (SALT) program, youth from the United States and Canada spend a year in Tanzania. |
