MCC accepting donations for Japan

March 29, 2011

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is accepting donations for the people of Japan following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that subsequently contributed to the current nuclear radiation crisis on the island nation.

Although MCC does not have program or staff in Japan, donations will be given to like-minded organizations, such as Mennonite World Conference, Church World Service and members of Canadian Churches in Action.

"It is hard to see such devastation and loss, whether in a wealthy country or a poor country. Suffering is the same," said Arli Klassen, executive director of MCC. "We are looking for ways to effectively partner in Japan to walk alongside in the suffering and in the rebuilding."

Japan’s national police agency reported on March 27 that 10,901 people are confirmed dead and 17,649 are listed as missing as a result of the March 11 earthquake and catastrophe. A total of 2,776 are listed as injured and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes.
