Baliui Jean, of Nerettes, a neighborhood in Petionville, on the edge of Port-au-Prince, stands in front of the ruins of her home. Jean is a single mother and cares for four children and a one-year-old grandson. They lost their home and all of their possessions in the earthquake. Jean's legs and ankles were injured when her house collapsed and her grandson was trapped under rubble and has been very sick ever since. 

Baliui Jean's house had extra rooms that she rented out to pay her children’s school fees but now she doesn't know how she will pay for their schooling. Before the earthquake, she sold clothing and shoes in the market and hopes to restart that business after she builds her house and somehow gets enough capital.  Jean received an MCC tarp from Emmanuel Michel to make the improvised shelter. MCC is helping Michel, a local leader, get supplies to people who need them most. 

Baliui Jean does not have family or friends that are able to help her rebuild, but Emmanuel Michel volunteered to help her build a temporary shelter.

Baliui Jean collects rocks to support the corner posts on the shelter she is building with neighbor Emmanuel Michel. She says that she has nothing right now. When her children wake up in the morning, they are hungry and she has no food or money. 

Emmanuel Michel's own home collapsed during the earthquake. He is a single father of three sons and a handyman. As he helps his neighbors rebuild, he hasn't charged for his labors. He says "everybody has a job to do and God will bless you for blessing others."

The Figareaus, from left to right, Daphney, Pascaline, Naika, Marie Lourdes and Vilaire, sit in the one-room shelter they built after they lost their home in the earthquake. Emmanuel Michel gave them two tarps from MCC to use as a roof.

Emmanuel Michel looks up Scripture verses before preaching on Sunday evening at the church that just formed in the camp where he lives. The church is made up of earthquake survivors and meets every evening in the street in front of the camp. 

"By working here, doing the work we are doing, we are glorifying God… when the earth shakes, Jesus is near us and we don't need to be afraid." said Emmanuel Michel in a sermon on Sunday evening in the camp where he lives.
