Synopsis: 
The IT Technician provides a support role in the day-to-day activities of the IT department, as identified in the following sections. Reports to: IT Director.

This position is a service worker (volunteer) position. MCC pays for travel to and from assignment, and provides complete living expenses for service workers plus a small monthly stipend.

Qualifications: 
Required:
  • 4 year degree in Computer Sciences or a related technical discipline OR 4 year degree in an unrelated discipline with 1-2 years of relevant post university work experience OR 4-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to peace and Christian faith
  • Travel required: 0-5%

Preferred:
  • Experience presenting/teaching computer application use to non-technical users
  • Experience and training in computer hardware support, including desktop and laptop computers, servers and printers
  • Ability to set up and configure new computers and peripherals, and diagnose and correct hardware problems
  • Experience and knowledge of computer networking principles and techniques, including configuration and maintenance of network hubs and switches, cabling and wireless networks
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows client and server operating systems
  • Experience maintaining Microsoft Active Directory installations and Citrix systems
  • Experience and knowledge of the Linux operating system
  • Experience with Apple computers

 

Assignment Description: 
Contacts/Relationships:
This position requires frequent contact with internal and external department staff to respond to inquiries and share information. Occasionally responds to regional and international staff.

Supervision:
Has no direct reports.
Assists in guiding work flow on a daily/weekly basis for external department staff, regional staff and international staff.

Complexity/Competencies:
The duties for this position require creativity, innovation and resourcefulness. The position assists in providing support for client, server and network technologies for the IT department of MCC. This position is responsible for assisting in many of the routine, systems maintenance tasks found in the day-to-day operations of the department. This position requires an individual with excellent communication skills, able to interact with staff at all levels and across all disciplines. The position requires a self-motivated, dependable, flexible, gracious personality. The person must be comfortable providing direct user support, "on-call", answering questions and solving hardware and program problems.

Independent Action:
Reports weekly to the IT administrator and monthly to the department director. Needs to be able to work under own initiative with ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous requests. Must be comfortable working under close supervision, independently, and also as a team player. Assignments are highly technical and task oriented, requiring discretion and judgment in determining the most appropriate solution or seeking outside help. Responsible for day-to-day administrative duties related to the position. Requires documentation of actions taken and processes required to complete recurring and emergency tasks.

End Result:
This position primarily serves the needs of multiple departments/jurisdictions. Decisions are made in consultation with the immediate supervisor, generally impacting on the international and US organizations, and to a lesser extent the Canadian organizations.

Technical 74%:
1. Hardware (41%):
a. Desktop/laptop:
i. Support Windows desktop and laptop workstations on a multi year replacement plan
ii. Maintain inventory and order supplies as needed
iii. Assist in recommending workstation improvements
b. Printer:
i. Assist in setting up and supporting printers on a multi year replacement plan
ii. Maintain printer supplies
iii. Assist in recommending printer improvements
c. Server:
i. Backups – assist in maintaining an organized data backup system
d. Network:
i. Assist in installing, troubleshooting and repairing network cabling, switches and other devices
ii. Assist in IT department’s involvement in office moves
iii. Assist in recommending network improvements
iv. Assist in troubleshooting and supporting internet connection
2. Software (21%):
a. Messaging (including Lotus Notes, Postini) – assist with setup, troubleshooting and support
b. Smartphone synchronization with Lotus Notes – assist with troubleshooting and support
c. Office applications (Microsoft Office) – assist in providing support
d. Desktop antivirus – assist with setup, troubleshooting and support
e. Login scripts – assist for Windows login scripts
f. MCC custom applications (including PaHR, RDB, MRI, PlanWin, FASwin and ReportBuilder) – assist with setup, troubleshooting and support

Location Description: 
Akron PA (pop 3,500) is a small town in Lancaster County, Pa., about 10 miles from Lancaster City (pop. 55,000). Lancaster County is ethnically diverse, with significant numbers of recent immigrants. In 2010 the Akron Elementary School next door to the MCC office reports students newly arrived from 10 countries speaking multiple languages. Lancaster County is home to large Mennonite, Amish and Brethren in Christ communities characterized by theological as well as racial/ethnic and cultural diversity in addition to many other church traditions. Millersville University, Franklin and Marshall College, and Elizabethtown College (founded by Church of the Brethren) are located in Lancaster County. There are a number of smaller private, Bible and community colleges. Approximately 100 MCC and MCC U.S. staff work in Akron with another 10 workers three miles away in the MCC East Coast Ephrata Office. The Akron office is an open office environment, featuring dividers between departments rather than walls.

The person will be a part of Akron Connection Service Program which is a service unit connected to MCC’s offices in Akron & Ephrata Pa. In recent years the unit is typically between 10-15 adults, ages 20-70, and may include families with children. Married couples and families live in MCC apartments while singles share a coed Unit House that is also a gathering place. Some of the group activities include 2 annual retreats, some community meals, monthly outings, biweekly Bible studies and impromptu gatherings.
