Is there flexibility with the starting day of SALT?
SALT is a group program and as such is designed with firm timelines and program events that build upon each other, preparing and equipping the program participants as appropriate. As with any group venture, there are advantages over making one’s own individual arrangements, as well as limitations that need to be accepted. Among those limitations are set timelines, including the starting and closing date of the program. Participants need to arrange their personal affairs in a way that allows them to attend the conferences and travel to and from assignment as scheduled, immediately following the orientation or re-entry.

Can I travel outside of my country of assignment during the service period?
SALT is an 11-month cross-cultural service commitment to experience the life of the host community while serving its needs. A deep level of integration, empathy and identification with the host community is expected. Travel back home or outside of the geographic region just because it is economically possible for SALTer to do so, goes against the philosophy and the stated motivations for the SALT service experience. SALTers are expected to remain in the country of assignment during the service term with the exception of family emergencies such as death or grave illness of an immediate family member (parents or siblings) and MCC related travels (regional MCC retreats).

Can my friends and family come to visit?
Yes. However, it is important that you consult MCC representatives in your location as well as the MCC partners you serve with regarding the timing of the visit. Keep in mind that to accompany your family during their visit you must plan to use your vacation time. If your assignment is in a local school, your vacation time has to fall within the school holidays.

Do I have to attend the re-entry retreat?
Yes. The re-entry retreat is an integral part of the SALT service experience. It is designed to provide a meaningful transitional space for the returnees while equipping them with useful information for successful re-integration into their home communities and culture. It also allows for tying up all loose ends related to the recent service experience.
