  1. Why should I fund-raise my minimum contribution amount?

Fund-raising is viewed as your opportunity and commitment to involve others in your MCC service experience. It creates a space for information sharing and conversation around issues of service in general and your service opportunity in particular. Fund-raising among family, friends and congregation creates a support circle invested in your service experience.

  1. How do I find out how much money I raised?

In June and July, MCC sends out bi-weekly updates regarding the contributions submitted to MCC as a result of your fund-raising. These updates are sent out on Friday and include only the total amount collected. For your convenience, the last July update will include the donor names. In case you have not reached the minimum contribution amount via your fund-raising process, you are expected to arrive to the orientation with an empty check, ready to make up the difference.

  1. Does MCC issue a refund of the funds raised above the minimum contribution amount?

Please, be aware that the minimum contribution amount does not offset the costs associated with offering this program. Donations towards SALT are viewed as charitable donations. A tax receipt is issued for every donation and the funds are applied towards overall running of the program. No refunds are issued in case funds above the suggested contribution minimum have been donated to MCC.

  1. What happens if I do not raise the required contribution minimum?

In case the contribution minimum has not been raised, participants are expected to write a check for the outstanding amount during the SALT orientation. If a church/congregation wants to make a pledge to donate more funds in the future, the participant needs to request a pledge form and ensure that it is filled out and submitted to MCC before or during the orientation. A concrete amount needs to be pledged with concrete submission dates stated. Some scholarship funds are available to cover a part of the suggested contribution minimum in situations where the home church struggles with resources. The participant needs to bring this to the attention of the SALT coordinator for further discernment during orientation.

  1. Who can I ask specific questions pertaining to my assignment?

During the placement and preparation process the SALT coordinator is your main source of information. The SALT coordinator answers or finds an answer to your question. Be aware that the high volume and intensity of the placement work do not allow for researching information you can research yourself. It is expected that you will take responsibility for accessing all the information already available to you (SALT webpage, mailings, Internet info, etc.) and only if the answer is not available, contact the GSL (Global Service Learning) staff. While we strive to provide you with the information necessary to make informed decisions and prepare yourself for assignment, we are in no position to cover all the details that one is curious about.

  1. Can I have my medical exams sooner than 90 days before the orientation?

If your medical coverage expires before May 14th, please, contact the SALT coordinator for a permission to schedule your medical exams more than 90 days before the orientation. You are responsible to follow up on findings of the medical exams to assure that you enter into the service in a good physical condition.

  1. What kind of inoculations do I need?

We suggest that you contact reputable travel clinic in your area for the list of inoculations needed. When it comes to anti-malarials you will need just a limited supply to carry you through a week or two before you access the locally available medications. Finally, if rabies or Japanese Encephalitis shots are suggested, contact the SALT coordinator if these are really needed for your location.

  1. Can my family come with me to the orientation?

MCC offers an information session for the family members that drive the program participants to the orientation. This session is scheduled on Saturday evening, following the registration. It is scheduled parallel to the dinner time for the program participants. It offers an opportunity for your support network to meet the MCC staff, to learn more about the program and ask questions regarding their role in supporting you throughout the service. There is a time scheduled for final good-byes and family departures after this session.
