  1. How does the MCC placement work?

Eligible files are forwarded to the SALT coordinator in the Global Service Learning (GSL) department. The SALT coordinator reads the files. If there is a clear match between an available placement opportunity and the applicant's skills, the file is forwarded to the MCC country staff and their partners.

In case there is a discrepancy between the applicant’s interests and the placement availability or the partners’ needs, the SALT coordinator contacts the applicant for further discernment before forwarding the file to the field.

Upon receiving the file in-country, MCC staff share the information with their partners. MCC defers to the partner when it comes to a decision regarding an assignment invitation. Once the decision is made and the invitation is extended, the candidate has five days for a final discernment. The described process can take anywhere from one to several weeks depending on a multitude of factors. On rare occasions the placement itself (from the time a file is shared with a country until an invitation is extended) can take over a month.

  1. Do I get to choose where would I like to go?

You are encouraged to state your placement preferences. It is helpful to describe the skills, gifts and abilities, as well as the relevant professional and voluntary involvements that support this preference. However, keep in mind that the more open you are to different geographic areas, the bigger the chance that a meaningful and mutually beneficial placement can be found. Although the applicant’s desires are considered, priority is given to the needs of the partners and the communities with which MCC works.

If you are focused on a Spanish speaking assignment only, be aware of the limited number of assignments. These assignments fill very quickly in the beginning of the placement process with a strong preference given to applicants with a high level of Spanish proficiency and relevant assignment skills.

  1. How long does the placement process take?

The actual placement process can take from one to several weeks. The length of time depends on the following factors:

    • The flexibility and openness of the candidate to consider a variety of service assignments regardless of their geographic location
    • The relevancy of applicant’s skills and experience
    • The availability of in-country staff and their service partners to review and discern on the submitted applications
    • Communication channels available between the MCC in-country staff and their partners
    • Number of candidates considered in each location and the preference in which the partners choose to extend their invitation
    • The availability of the applicant for telephone consultations, e-mail updates and discernment re: actual available placement opportunities

  1. What should I consider when figuring out my assignment interests?

SALT placement is a result of successful reconciliation of applicant’s interests and partner needs. We expect our applicants to be open and serious about the needs of the communities and organizations with whom we partner. While personal, professional and spiritual growth of program participants is taken seriously, as an organization we believe that the ultimate commitment behind a service program of any kind should be to serve the needs of the communities and partners as defined by them. When reading the assignment job description ask yourself if you have the qualifications and gifts needed to carry out the job successfully and with a limited amount of assistance. Do not confuse SALT with an intensive language program of some kind or with a young adult travel agency.

  1. Can I decline an invitation?

Yes, you can decline an invitation. However, keep in mind that the invitation was extended to you after a thoughtful consideration. The partners believe that you have applied to SALT because of your interest and willingness to serve where service is needed. An invitation to an assignment communicates the need our partners see and their belief that you can serve this need effectively. Declining an invitation without meaningful explanation puts in question your actual motivations for SALT participation and often discourages the partners from program participation.
