  1. What are the participation requirements?

MCC workers do not need to be Mennonite, but must:

    1. have a personal Christian faith
    2. be active members of a Christian church
    3. be committed to the teaching of nonviolent biblical peacemaking

MCC also has lifestyle expectations for its workers.

SALT is for single, Christian young adults from 18 to 27 years old, who are U.S. or Canadian citizens. The MCC application process requires disclosure of one’s faith position, as well as pastoral and other character references. Keep in mind that these are prerequisites for being considered for service with MCC SALT program and as such, they do not guarantee an actual placement. The placement selection itself is done by our partners around the world in cooperation with the MCC Representatives in the respective areas. The placement selection is based on the needs of the partner organization and their interest in applicant's skills, gifts, previous experience and personal qualities.

  1. What is the participant’s financial contribution?

The participants' contribution minimum is reviewed annually and posted on the SALT web page each January. It is expected that participants will fundraise and submit the needed amount before coming to the program orientation in August. For the 2007/08 service term this contribution minimum was $3650 US for participants from the United States and $4300 CDN for participants from Canada.

  1. What happens if I raise more than the minimum contribution amount?

Contributions received by MCC do not offset the actual costs of the program and are not tied to individual program costs for a SALTer. They are viewed and receipted as a charitable contribution towards the work of MCC and its SALT programming. If as a result of the program participant’s fund-raising more than the expected minimum is received, the funds are applied towards the overall program costs. No refunds or transfers to the personal drawing account of the individual participants are issued.

  1. When would I leave and when would I return?

The actual service period starts and ends in Akron, Pennsylvania, with a week long program orientation and a three day re-entry retreat. The seven day orientation begins on Saturday preceding the second full week in August and lasts until Friday evening. Departures for assignment are scheduled directly following the orientation.

  1. Where would I be going?

Assignments are available in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean and the Middle East. While the applicant’s personal preferences are considered, the emphasis is on finding a service placement in which the applicant’s skills, personal qualities and experience meet the partner’s needs. Eligible applicants are shared with appropriate partners, who then decide whom they would like to invite into the assignment.

  1. Can I get a college credit for my SALT service?

Students from different colleges and universities have sometimes used SALT as their practicum or other college credit equivalent. It is the responsibility of the applicant to check with his/her educational institution the possibility of and requirements for this to happen and then communicate to MCC what kind of assistance is needed.

  1. What about my student loans? Does MCC help out in this area?

Yes. MCC loan assistance is given according to the schedule of the worker's loan repayment plan up to $2,500 U.S. and $2,500 Cdn. annually, not to exceed, in any given year, 25% of the original loan amount upon completion of studies.

  1. How do I speed up the application process?

Practices that help you to stay on top of your application process:

    • Provide MCC with a functional e-mail address and check that e-mail regularly
    • Inform MCC immediately about any changes or updates to your contact information
    • If you plan to travel or be out of town, inform MCC about the dates and if possible provide alternative contact information
    • Where possible, provide e-mail addresses for your references
    • Follow up regularly with MCC and your references
    • If a timely face to face eligibility interview is not possible, inquire about the option of having a telephone interview
    • Please, keep in mind that informing your support network about SALT related matters and/or researching the answers to their questions is your responsibility

  1. What is the eligibility interview?

The eligibility interview gives MCC and the applicant an opportunity to learn more about each other and to discern if there is mutual compatibility. Following the interview you are notified regarding your eligibility to serve with MCC. Being eligible to serve with MCC means that an applicant meets the core faith criteria that represent the foundation of MCC's work. These are prerequisites for being considered for service with MCC and as such, they do not guarantee an actual placement.

  1. Will I be placed if I am eligible?

As mentioned above, eligibility does not guarantee a placement. The placement selection itself is done by our partners around the world in cooperation with MCC Representatives in the respective areas. The skills, gifts, previous experience and personal qualities of the eligible candidates are reviewed through the prizm of partner needs and interests. Upon this review, an invitation is extended to a candidate who seems to be the best overall match for what the partners are looking for. Willingness to consider a wide array of assignments in all geographic locations increases the chances of a successful placement.

  1. Can I postpone my SALT participation for later?

Yes. Upon completing the application process you can decide to postpone your SALT participation. To assure that your file is kept open for a future SALT placement with MCC, you must notify the appropriate Human Resources or GSL personnel about your request to keep your file active for next year.
