Session 2: Hearing our stories
Handout for Session 2: First memory of race
Think of one of your, if the not the earliest, memories of race.
- of people being different because of their skin color
- people you knew, event, something you saw, heard, felt
What feelings, images, thoughts do you have about that memory?
Do any other experiences come to mind as you grew older?
- Were those experiences positive, negative, neutral?
How do those early memories compare to your present feelings, thoughts,
experiences surrounding race?
- jot down your observations
Keep this sheet with you. You may want to do further reflection on these
foundational experiences. One thing society teaches us is that we shouldn't
think about race, that we should be color-blind. Race does matter. We need to
think, reflect, read, pray and act on the dynamics of racism in our church and
society. You don't need to share anything that is on this sheet. Keep it for
further reflection.
