Comforting Others
Supplies
- 12" squares of cotton/cotton blend fabric.
- fabric markers (Crayola)
- 9" embroidery hoops
Preparation
- Insert squares into embroidery hoops and draw fabric tight.
- Set up table and chairs
- Adult or teenager prepares stories about blankets and comforters keeping people warm.
Children will be invited to the table to decorate a block while the storyteller shares stories about blankets. Encourage the children to think what it would feel like to sleep on a floor, perhaps dirt or cement, without a blanket.
Share letters of gratitude for blankets MCC offered to refugees. The blocks will be sewn into a comforter, knotted and shipped with other comforters by MCC.
Options
- Stencil each block and have children stitch around the stencil or color in the stencil with their fabric markers.
- Auction the comforter. Place blocks onto a sticky mat so buyers can see the overall design. Announce the names of all block participants. Auction the comforter with the promise of a completed comforter within six weeks.
- Use coloring book pages. Offer children fabric crayons or fabric paint to color the page. Use a hot-iron and transfer the picture to the fabric blocks. The picture will transfer best if no crayon glumps are on the paper.
- Sew plain cotton blocks together. Use fabric markers to trace hands. Record each child's name and announce over the auction.
