Scavenger Hunt

A Scavenger Hunt to gather information at different Relief Sale stations on the grounds is a great way to familiarize children with the multiple aspects of the sale and also to learn information that would help them appreciate the work of MCC.

Set Up

Begin with a table which is well marked where children can obtain their clues and list of instructions. You may wish to provide them with a MCC pencil (contact your nearest MCC office).

Choose which booths you would like them to visit and have them search for the answer to your question. Questions can be as simple or as complex as you desire.

Examples

  • Go to the produce booth and guess a pumpkin's weight.
  • Go to the Quilt Display and ask a question about a quilt or wall-hanging. What is a particular pattern name or how long would it take to create that quilt or wall-hanging?
  • Go to one or several food booths and ask how many items they are making.
  • Go to the Penny Power booth and guess the number of coin in a jar and obtain a fact about MCC's help around the world.
  • Go to the Ten Thousand Villages booth and look for an item from a particular country or have them look for the answer of "how many countries does Ten Thousand Villages work in?"
  • Go to the children's activity center and have them find a fact about worldwide needs of food or water.

You get the idea.

When they have finished, instruct them to bring their list of answers back to the table. Obtain their name and mailing address and send a gift from Ten Thousand Villages to the ones who have obtained the greater number of correct answers or provide a gift certificate to Ten Thousand Villages and they can choose their own gift. You may wish to have an ending time for this event.

You also may wish to time their search (from when they picked up their list until they returned the list.) The winner is the one with the greater number of correct answers in the shortest amount of time.

Give a small prize to everyone who returns the list. Or you may give them each a small coin to place in the Penny Power container and explain to them what that coin could buy in some countries.
