Hay Bale Maze
This activity involves the challenge of working your way through a maze while learning about MCC's work in various countries and completing a service project along the way.
Supplies
- Hay bales (200-300 depending on size and height of maze)
- School kit bags and contents
- Passports (see Sample Hay Bale Maze Passport (PDF))
- Country and completion stickers
(Avery #5293 round labels were used with graphics from a color printer.)
- Country information and MCC stories from 5-6 countries
- Beverage coupons
- Game tickets
- Entry forms for drawing
- International coins
Directions
- Construct a maze of hay bales 2-3 bales high (see Sample Hay Bale Maze Layout (PDF) for ideas). Design the maze with several stops along the way, with each stop representing a certain country.
- Charge $5 (or whatever seems appropriate) per child to go through the maze. Give each child a passport and an empty school kit bag. Send children in groups of 5-8 when possible.
- Have a volunteer at each of 5-6 stops share information and a story about a certain country. After listening to the story, give each child a country sticker for their passport and an item to add to their school kit bag.
- At the exit, have an adult check each passport and school kit, and add a completion sticker to the passport. In addition to keeping their passport, each child could also receive a discounted beverage coupon, game tickets, chance to enter a drawing (one sale gave away a scooter) and a world coin.
