Workers begin assignments with MCC

AKRON, Pa. – Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) commissioned new workers for service after they participated in an orientation at MCC offices in Akron, Oct. 18-29, 2010.
MCC, a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC personnel usually work in partnership with local churches and community organizations. Each year about 200 people begin MCC assignments. Currently, 1,126 MCC workers serve in 49 countries. Participants beginning assignments overseas include:
Nathan Abrahams and Elizabeth Weidner of Boulder, Colo., are serving three-year assignments in Teustepe, Nicaragua, as development promoters. Abrahams has a bachelor’s in art education from Bethel College, North Newton, Kan. Weidner has bachelor’s degrees in geography from University of Colorado-Boulder and in Spanish from Bethel College. They attended Boulder Mennonite Church.
Lisa and Michael Bade of Seattle are serving three-year assignments in Prey Veng, Cambodia, as education advisors. Lisa has a bachelor’s in art from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa., and a master’s in education from Western Washington University, Bellingham. Michael has a bachelor’s in social work from Seattle Pacific University and a master’s in education and human development from Pacific Oaks College, Pasadena, Calif. The Bades attended Seattle Mennonite Church.
Jacquie and Rick Block of Saskatoon, Sask., along with their children Ezra and Hilary, are serving three-year assignments in San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico, as community development workers. Jacquie has a bachelor’s in Bible study from Associated Canadian Theological Schools, Langley, B.C., and a master’s in theological studies from Emmaus Bible College, Dubuque, Iowa. Rick has a bachelor’s in environmental science and a master’s in agroforestry from University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. They attended Faith River Christian Fellowship in Saskatoon.
Anje and Philip Cassel of Raphine, Va., along with their children Everett and John, are serving three-year assignments in Macha, Zambia. Anje works as an antiretroviral therapy nurse, and Philip is working with the Maintenance Department at Macha Hospital. Anje has a bachelor’s in biology and nursing from Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Harrisonburg, Va. Philip obtained a bachelor’s in biology from EMU. The Cassels attended Staunton Mennonite Church,Va.
Janelle and Simeon DiGennaros of Columbus, Ohio, with their son, Malachi, are serving three-year assignments in Arusha, Tanzania. Janelle’s position is being determined. Simeon is working with appropriate technology and marketing.Janelle has a certificate in Bible study from Rosedale (Ohio) Bible College, Ohio. Simeon has a bachelor’s in international studies and a master’s in development economics from The Ohio State University. The DiGennaros attended Columbus Network of Microchurches.
Grace Hercyk of Bath, N.Y., is serving a three-year assignment in Phenom Penh, Cambodia, as a peace advisor. Hercyk has a bachelor’s in peace, justice and conflict studies from Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va. She attended Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, Hammondsport, N.Y.
Goldie and Lloyd Kuhns of Akron, Pa., are serving three-year assignments in Managua, Nicaragua, as Connecting Peoples coordinators. Lloyd has a bachelor’s in sociology from Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va., and a master’s in business administration from Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz. Goldie obtained a business certificate from Durham Business College, Phoenix, Ariz. They attended Akron Mennonite Church.
Lucas and Sarah Land of Copperas Cove, Texas, along with their children Asher and Lydia, are serving three-year assignments in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. They will work with the Low German Mennonite community, Lucas as a development worker and Sarah as a program support worker. Lucas obtained a bachelor’s in music from Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, and a master of divinity in global missions from George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Waco, Texas. Sarah obtained a bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Lutheran University. They attended Hope Fellowship, Waco.
Kathryn Mansfield of South Bend, Ind., is serving a three-year assignment in Kenya as a peacebuilding coordinator. Mansfield obtained a bachelor’s in history from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., and a master’s in international peace studies from the University of Notre Dame, Ind.
Anne Morel of Downington, Pa., is serving a three-year assignment in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as a business manager. Morel obtained a bachelor’s in economics from Samford University, Birmingham, Ala., and a master’s in international economic development from Eastern University, St. Davids, Pa. She attended Christ Community Church, West Chester, Pa.
Lynden Neudorf of High Level, Alta., is serving a three-year assignment in San Salvador, El Salvador, as an HIV and AIDS educator. Neudorf obtained a bachelor’s in music from Augustana University College, Camrose, Alta. He also obtained a bachelor’s in social work from the University of Calgary, Edmonton. Neudorf attended La Crete Christian Fellowship Church, Alta.

Bernadette Bracken of Lancaster, Pa., is serving with MCC in Akron, Pa., as an executive assistant. Bracken obtained a bachelor’s in psychology and sociology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She attends the Worship Center, Leola, Pa.
Christopher Collier of Chicago is serving a two-year assignment as a church community worker at Living Water Community Church in Chicago, where he attends. Collier is studying education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
Stephanie Dyck of Winnipeg, Man., is serving with MCC Canada as an administrative assistant. Dyck has a bachelor’s in international studies from The University of Winnipeg. She attends Saint Benedict’s Table, Winnipeg.
Stephanie Epp of Saskatoon, Sask., is serving with MCC Saskatchewan as an adminstrative and communications assistant. Epp has a bachelor’s in theology from Canadian Mennonite University, Winnipeg, Man. She attends Nutana Park Mennonite Church in Saskatoon.
Sonya Gaffan of Kingsville, Ont., is serving in Leamington, Ont., as general manager of Et Cetera Shoppe, Furniture and More, a thrift shop. Gaffan has a bachelor’s in English education from the University of Windsor, Ont. She attends St. John de Brebeuf Clustered Catholic Church, Kingsville.
David Horst of Leola, Pa., is serving in Akron as an administrative assistant in the Asia department. Horst obtained a bachelor’s in history from Goshen College, Goshen, Ind., and attends Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, Pa.
Dana Krushel of Saskatoon, Sask., is serving with MCC Saskatchewan as a community engagement coordinator. Krushel has a bachelor’s in Christian ministries and intercultural studies from Bethany College, Hepburn, Sask., and is currently taking courses for a bachelor’s in social work at the University of Regina, Sask. Krushel attends Rock of Ages Lutheran Brethren Church, Saskatoon.
James Roth of Sumas, Wash., is serving in Abbotsford, B.C., as a manager in the Furniture and More thrift shop. Roth obtained a bachelor’s in sociology from Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va. He attends Sevenoaks Alliance Church, Abbotsford.
Roderick Ryner of South Porcupine, Ont., is serving with MCC Ontario in Timmins as an Aboriginal Neighbours program associate. Ryner obtained a bachelor’s in social work from Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ont., and a master’s in social welfare policy from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ont. He is also an education doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto. Ryner attends Porcupine United Church, South Porcupine.
Amos Shakya of Chicago is serving a one-year assignment in Chicago as a church community worker at Living Water Community Church, where he attends. Shakya obtained a bachelor’s degree in business from Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Nepal.
Dennis Vogt of Abbotsford, B.C., is serving as a material resource coordinator in Abbotsford. He has degrees from Canadian Bible College, Regina, Sask., and Trinity Western University, Langley, B.C. He attends Valley Heights Community Church, Chilliwack, B.C.
James Wheeler of Akron, Pa., is serving with MCC’s Global Family education sponsorship program in Akron. Wheeler obtained a bachelor’s in biology from Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va. He attends Pilgrims Mennonite Church, Akron.
