MDS poised to respond to Hurricane Irene
A message from sister organization, Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS):
The U.S. eastern seaboard is bracing for Hurricane Irene. The storm could affect a large swath of the east coast, from the Carolinas up to New England, involving as many as 14 states. The National Hurricane Center downgraded the storm Friday from a Category 3 to a Category 2 hurricane, but authorities say it continues to be a major and dangerous threat.
MDS units in Florida, North Carolina, eastern Virginia, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York are ready to respond. MDS is working closely with FEMA and the state VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) agencies for information sharing and needs assessment.
Hurricane Irene could be a prolonged response with a large mass care effort.
