Wacheeyay! Greetings, from Attawapiskat First Nation
This remote Cree community is planted gently in the muskeg that sits along the Eastern Coast of James Bay more than 600 km from Timmins ON. It is in this coastal community, home to 1700 members, that the spirit of sharing, the seasonal hunt and the Cree language are still very much alive. The Catholic Church, watching over the Attawapiskat River, cradles the importance of faith, so valued by the community.
“Hands together” was an experiential learning opportunity that allowed participants to move into new relationships with one other. The invitation from Attawapiskat First Nation called us to journey to this community in the far north, where we listened, shared, grew in understanding, and joined hands with youth as people united. It was in this way that we were able to begin bridging the distance between our communities.
