Walking with People In Poverty

Jesus announced his mission: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor…." And what is good news for the poor? Affordable housing, quality relationships, wages that sustain a dignified life, meaningful community, adequate social assistance, a valued voice in society … and much more. In Toronto, Kitchener and Timmins we respond to poverty by walking alongside marginalized people with compassion and caring.

Lazarus Rising

Lazarus Rising

Accompanying marginalized people on Toronto's streets

Lazarus Rising is an Anabaptist response to homelessness in Toronto. By walking with the poor on Toronto's streets, we hope to encounter the Jesus of "the least of these" and to put legs to Menno Simons' conviction that "true evangelical faith … clothes the naked, feeds the hungry, comforts the sorrowful, shelters the destitute."

Advocating for People in Poverty

Queen's Park and beyond

MCC Ontario's advocacy for people in poverty provides a clear voice before the provincial government for and with those with whom we walk. We also engage our constituency in awareness-raising and assist in advocating for action to create a poverty free Ontario. The foundation for our efforts is the biblical vision of a society where no one is in poverty.

TOOLS

Working toward economic justice in Northern Ontario

In the North, MCC works at promoting economic justice in a variety of ways: from an annual showcase of handmade crafts by Aboriginal artisans to raising awareness of the realities that face community members who are unable to meet their own basic needs of food and shelter. Fair Trade coffee sales also contribute to an expanded awareness of global issues.
