Another record-setting MCC meat canning seasonMay 12, 2006 MCC's 2005-2006 meat canning season yielded a record 566,322 cans of meat. In a tradition that dates to 1946, a four-person canning crew takes the mobile meat canner on the road from October through April. This year, the canner visited 13 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. MCC canning coordinator Tim Friesen thanks the members of this year's canning crew and the thousands of volunteers that make meat canning possible. Through vats of steaming cans and hundreds of thousands of pounds of processed meat, they work to feed the hungry as Jesus taught. "They're able to do the basic thing the Gospel calls us to do," Friesen says. The canner and canning crew travel to communities across the United States and Canada. Local volunteers donate meat — most of which is now purchased rather than raised by volunteers themselves — and help the MCC crew cut, cook, stir and can it. A much-valued source of protein for families impacted by war, disaster and poverty, each can feeds five to 10 people. Over 1 million pounds of meatBetween April 1, 2005, and March 31, 2006, MCC provided more than 1 million pounds of meat to people in 21 countries, including Canada and the United States. The largest amount — nearly 390,000 pounds — was shipped to North Korea. Canning crewEach year, MCC seeks people to serve on the mobile meat canner. Canning crew members serve two-year terms, spending seven months on the road with the canner and working in Akron, Pennsylvania, the other five months of the year.
