The MCC Family Services office is a space where the possibility of transformation of lives can take place for Low German Mennonites. This office serves the long established and growing Low German Mennonite community in southern Manitoba.

We help in the transformation of lives in different ways
- documentation work,
- access to services,
- networking with other service providers in the area,
- sharing information and working with other MCC offices that assist Low German Mennonites.

Documentation work: The process of immigration can be confusing and difficult and we aim to make the process as understandable and simple as possible for clients. Our offices act as a type of clearinghouse on immigration issues for Low German Mennonites. We aim to give them consistent and clear information in their own language on various immigration issues that affect them. Work on immigration documentation, such as applications for permanent residency, smoothes the way for family members to re-unite. Documentation work also makes the process of finding work easier for those who came to Canada in search of employment to support their families.

Access to services: We exist so the Low German Mennonite have a voice in our society. The complexity of Canadian systems and the lack of English language skills of many Low German Mennonites makes it difficult to access needed services. We give information and fill out forms for provincial and local organizations that provide added income or supports to improve their quality of life. We are also in the process of building up a base of volunteers to provide transportation and do translation.

Working Cooperatively: We are not alone in our tasks of assisting this group. We network with other MCC offices working with Low German Mennonites sharing information and resources. The complexity around documentation makes the sharing of knowledge vital to provide consistent and accurate information to our clients. Our office also works together with other local service providers by sharing information. We are planning a learning day for local area service providers to foster cultural sensitivity for the Low German Mennonites, thereby providing better care for them.

The office has itself undergone a transformation in the last year. I was hired in the spring of 2006 as Program Coordinator. I have a passion to do good works among the Low German people. This passion was kindled by my academic experience in interviewing several Low German woman for my Master’s thesis as well as through personal experiences as the daughter of Low German Mennonite immigrants from Mexico.
