Eldad is a centre of care and training for men with intellectual
disabilities of various levels.
Of the three programs at the centre, two work with individuals
that need varying levels of support in life skills and decision
making. The third, the Alternative Justice Program, is designed
for the province wide population of men with intellectual disabilities
that have come in conflict with the law. It provides opportunities
to learn a positive value system and skills so that there are
positive options to live their future life in new ways.
Program Activities
For individuals with intellectual disabilities it is even very
true that change is a process. One of the men, Wayne, has demonstrated
this to us time and again this year as he has shown that if we
as staff are willing to be involved in the repetitive process
of training and encouraging him, he can live in a new way where
he is healthier, happier, and contributing significantly.
Eldad has both a residential and a vocational program. Together
the staff can continually monitor and affirm positive changes
with all the men. One of the most encouraging things is to observe
how, over time, the men become more sensitive to the power of
making positive choices and admitting when they have made choices
which are destructive to themselves or others. Sometimes
I think you guys are too strict but in all honesty if you werent,
I probably wouldnt have changed This comment was made
by one of the men after being confronted and owning up to an incident.
Administration
There has been a lot of work done with the Advisory Committee
in reviewing what Eldad is accomplishing and where we want
to go in the future. We celebrated our first independent audit
which affirmed our financial practices. We start the next year
with several new Committee members and an expectation of continuing
the process of encouraging all - to live life in new ways by reflecting
the love of Christ.
