MCC in Laos

Asia

MCC focuses on community development in Laos, with projects in health, education, agriculture, food security and income generation.

In Sangthong District, a primary health care project concentrates on bringing health education to some of the region’s poorest families, often through village health volunteers and traditional birth attendants. Wells and latrines are also dug as part of the effort to promote health in the region, which is northwest of the country’s capital, Vientiane.

MCC workers teach English to children and adults and work in designing and marketing Lao handicrafts to local and international businesses. In addition, MCC’s Global Family Program provides support for students who can’t afford uniforms, school fees or books, for children who were injured by ordnance and need tutoring while recovering in the capital and for students from remote ethnic villages who are studying in Luang Prabang and Luang Nam Ta.

At the Bolikhamxay Agriculture and Forestry College, MCC works to promote fruit trees and vegetable crops and research with upland rice. MCC supports efforts to train families in the growing of new crops and in using affordable organic and botanical pesticides, as well as in income generation activities such as growing mushroom, rattan and fruit and mulberry trees.
