Fred Berg MCC relief supplies well received
Tim Shenk Fred Berg, an MCC truck driver, said that MCC's food and relief supplies were well received by survivors of Hurricane Katrina at a Sept. 5 distribution in Bayou La Batre, Ala. "Once they opened it, it was like 'Wow, this is what we need,'" Berg said. "You had buckets (relief kits), you had good blankets, and you had meat." Berg was a driver of one of four trucks that carried supplies from Ephrata, Pennsylvania, to Bayou La Batre, a Gulf Coast town where many homes were damaged or destroyed by the storm. The truckloads included 19,200 cans of turkey, 10,000 blankets, 5,000 health kits, 5,000 school kits and more than 2,000 relief kits. The trucks provided supplies to local people who arrived as the truck drivers unloaded the majority of their cargo at a senior center that is being used for distributions. "What they really liked was the relief bucket," said Jerry Hiebert, an MCC truck driver. "The bucket was perfect for this situation right now." |
