Facing a new challenge

by Fredrick

When I was selected to come to the USA by the MCC IVEP program, I was excited to get to come, but at the same time I thought about my parents, my friends and my home. Two questions were in my mind at that time. "How can I stay together with American people who have a different culture than me and will they love me as my family does?"

In Innisfree I learned some new experiences, like cooking, how to use the computer, gardening and working in the woodshop. Innisfree also provided me with some other training like CPR, First Aid and Medication Assistant. Sign Language is also helping me improve my English.

One important experience in my life is this: I had never lived with people with mental and physical disabilities before, but now I have done so at Innisfree. When I first arrived, it was hard to accept this new life. I said to myself, "why am I here?". But later, it was really nice. Although they are people with disabilities they are hard workers, they can make some good things by themselves, they are a big help, they are filled with hope, and not easily made nervous. They are smart and interesting. I really enjoyed being with them. I learned many things about them. From their characteristics I also learned about myself. I love them.
