Canada in Haiti

Break the chains of Haiti's debt

Canada has had a hand in Haiti's affairs for decades and has a dominant role within the United Nations' prison and judiciary branches and in human rights training of the police forces in the country. The U.N. forces in Haiti have been repeatedly accused of human rights violations against the civilian population, as has the police force. The role of Canadian forces in Haiti must be carefully monitored by independent observers to assure compliance with norms of international humanitarian law. In addition, Canada as a voting member of the Inter-American Development Bank should pressure the bank to immediately forgive Haiti's debt, with no conditions.

Response

  • Churches should educate themselves on Haiti and what role Canada has in the country.

  • Join the Micah Challenge initiative and download a Micah tool-kit to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals in your church, Sunday school classes, and bible studies.

  • Participate in "Belonging" — the Canadian Governor General, who is Haitian, has an on-line forum to share thoughts and strategies to eliminate racial discrimination.
