Street Children

LEISWAD is the result of a calling for several individuals and organizations. The centre is operated by the Lebanese Evangelical (Protestant) Society (LES). This is the organization that runs the programs of the Lebanese Protestant church, including orphanages and a variety of schools.

All of the children at LEISWAD live on the streets. They usually find a bridge and put up some cardboard boxes to keep the wind and rain out. Many of them do not have the basic life skills that North Americans take for granted. They do not know how to eat with a fork and knife, use the bathroom, or brush their teeth. None of them have attended school. They live an existence full of violence, hunger and fear.

When they first arrive at the centre the children are afraid because they think it is a prison. It soon becomes clear that this is not the case. John Eter, the director, describes the primary aim of the centre as "giving the feeling to the children that they are precious human beings." For many of the children this is the first family unit they have ever seen.

Global Family funds are used to help pay staff to care for the children, ensure a place to live, food to eat and an education for stateless children.
