Each of the children at the orphanage has a story to tell (Egypt)

Each of the children at an orphanage for girls in Cairo, Egypt has a story to tell, and if it were not a sad story they wouldn't have the need to be there.

Three of the girls came to the orphanage 2 years ago, after their father, a peasant farmer, was in a serious train accident. In addition to head injuries, he lost one arm entirely and half of the other arm. This was devastating for the family. It effectively removed their means of livelihood, since he could no longer work as a farmer. On top of that, he could not even take care of his own personal hygiene. Reluctantly the parents sent their 3 daughters to the orphanage.

It soon became apparent that the oldest 2 girls, Inje and Mariam, had experienced some trauma. The most obvious symptom they displayed was a strong aversion to the color red. As the Sister in charge learned more of their story, she discovered that the children had actually been present at the time of the accident. The girls were 6, 4, and 2 at the time. Sister found a compassionate psychiatric doctor and he has been meeting with the girls to help them cope with the trauma they experienced.

Sister is full of admiration for the young family. She knows the parents are trying their best to cope with their circumstances and that if they ever get on a stable financial footing they will joyfully welcome their daughters home. In the meantime, she does what she can for them. Once a month she provides money for the parents to come from their village, 2 1/2 hours south of Cairo, so the family can be together. She has also provided the parents with some things to make their life a little easier, including a bed for the father, so he doesn't need to sleep on the ground and a small stove so the mother doesn't have to light a fire every time she needs to cook or heat water to wash her husband. And, of course, the orphanage is providing a home and loving care for the girls until the time their family can once again care for them.
