After School Support Program
The Franciscan Nuns After School Support Program in Damascus began four years ago to help children at risk of becoming street children to stay in school. The program includes 40 children and their families. All the children have been enrolled in schools according to their age, and not proficiency level. Their years away from the educational system have affected their performance. The After School Support Program provides free after-school assistance to these children. Professional teachers and a core of volunteers provide assistance with homework. The nuns collect the children from different areas of Damascus and take them to the social services centre downtown. They eat a snack, study, use the computer, play in groups, study, eat sandwiches for a light supper, then go home. Global Family funds support the nuns in providing school resources (books, supplies), food, transportation and paying tutors. *2008-09 fully sponsored
