Guatemala
Adult education and literacy program
The K'ekchi people, speaking only K'ekchi'
and living in remote rural areas, have not had
access to education in Spanish-speaking
Guatemala. For the past 25 years, the K'ekchi'
Mennonite Church, with the help of partners,
has been providing a correspondence
educational program to youth and young
adults. Though they study alone throughout
the week, these students meet with accredited
teachers on Saturdays for instruction and
support in Grades 1-11. Global Family helps
to cover the teachers' and supervisors' salaries,
transportation, and administrative and
operating costs of the program. *2008-09 fully
sponsored.
