Sisters Hamidah, 8, and Sakina, 10, will attend a recently-rebuilt primary school in Paghman District on Kabul's outskirts. View MapAfghanistanPaghman Primary SchoolBecause of several decades of warfare, complete breakdown of national infrastructures such as education and health care, misguided political policies, severe drought, and repeated earthquakes, Afghanistan's children have suffered more than almost any other population in the world. Political changes in 2001 brought hope for change; 2003 introduced ongoing military action in the form of the “war on terror.” Afghanistan urgently needs sustainable aid to rebuild basic systems. Help the Afghan Children, a U.S.-based non-profit organization, cooperates with the Ministry of Education of Afghanistan in restoring basic education. Global Family funds support computer, peace, and environmental education programs in 5 schools, as well as operational and program support for Abdulla Bin Omar Primary School in Paghman District, Kabul Province, HTAC's first model school in Afghanistan. Approximately 5,575 Afghan children directly benefit from these programs. *2008-09 fully sponsored.
