One of the Ik tribal students with her mother. UgandaIk EducationThe Ik people, a marginalized community of 13,000 who traditionally are hunters, beekeepers, and farmers, live in the newly formed Kaabong District in northeast Uganda. Resources are very scarce; there are no Ik teachers or nurses, because until quite recently the Ik have had no schools. Now there are 2 primary schools and more Ik parents are beginning to understand the value of education for their children. But they rarely have money to send their children to the boarding schools, hours away from their villages. The Ik people are respected as a peaceful culture. Through the Kotido Peace Initiative’s Ik Education Program, Global Family provides funds for 40 Ik children at Komukuny Girls and Komukuny Boys Primary Schools as well as students in secondary school. Items like food, clothing, soap, pens and pencils, a sleeping mat, a jerry can for water, a school uniform or shoes are provided as needed. *2008-09 fully sponsored |
