Churches in Ukraine respond to new freedoms, challenges

Yulia Gerasimenko, 10, is a student at Chortitzer School #81 in Zaporozhye, a city of about one million people in eastern Ukraine that once was part of the Chortitza Mennonite settlement. Consisting of eight villages, Chortitza was the first settlement established by Mennonites who began immigrating from Prussia in 1789. The school was built by Mennonites in 1896.
