While the laborer communities located along the backwater tributaries in southern India did not experience a direct hit by the tsunami, their communities were flooded as the tributaries rose rapidly and deposited debris and salt water in their fields. In the village of Gundumedu, Thyalnayagi (no surname), points to the level the floodwaters rose in her house. Her house is more than 3 kilometres from the ocean.
