In southern India, two very different but related communities along the coastal areas suffered from the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami. The fisherfolk who rely on the ocean for their livelihood and the laborers who work for the fisherfolk both lost lives, homes, fields and their livelihoods. The laborers, who live in villages tucked along the backwater tributaries, were neglected in the initial relief response. Mennonite Central Committee and SUCHI, (Social Unit for Community Health and Improvement) have begun to work with these communities.
