Shelters in the camps are often barely more than domes of sticks, straw and tarps, such as these in Otash camp, a short drive from Kalma. Part of Mennonite Central Committee’s response to the crisis in Darfur is the construction of 1,110 family-size shelters of bamboo poles, grass matting and plastic sheeting through a partner organization, the Sudan Council of Churches.
