MCC in EthiopiaAfrica MCC supports a network of rural schools among Oromo-speaking people in partnership with the Meserete Kristos Church Relief and Development Association. In Addis Ababa, MCC provides student scholarships. MCC workers teach English at an elementary school and at Meserte Kristos College. MCC supports a food security project near Lake Awassa, which builds both community and household assets. Local farmers participate in projects to conserve soil and water and to build roads to bring their harvests to market. They are also participating in local savings groups to make investments in livestock, seeds or other needs. MCC has a long history of famine relief and food security work in rural areas of Ethiopia. Recently, MCC started working with a partner organization to improve nutrition in a poor urban area of Addis Ababa. This work, as well as the work near Lake Awassa, is funded with grants from the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. MCC provides funds and supplies for churches to care for people with HIV/AIDS in Addis Ababa and other regions of the country. MCC also provides conflict transformation training for church and community leaders. |
