Thi Nguyen, (right) MCC East Coast Service Worker South AlabamaThi Nguyen, MCC East Coast Service Worker, connects with the Vietnamese community in Bayou la Batre, Ala., in response to Hurricane Katrina. In partnership with the MCC Gulf Disaster Response out of Central States, Nguyen divides his time between Lutheran Disaster Services, in Bayou la Batre, Ala., and Way of Life Community Church in Mobile, Ala. Many Vietnamese residents don't speak English, and therefore, don't know about resources available to them, even though they may have lived there for 30 years. Nguyen's role is to provide a link between the Vietnamese community in Bayou la Batre and the social service that are available to them. Nguyen provides transportation for elderly people and helps with translation regarding social assistance programs and immigration issues. This work provided MCC East Coast with the opportunity to partner with two churches that have a common vision for ministry, the Vietnamese Mennonite Church in Philadelphia, and Way of Life Community Church in Mobile, Ala. A team from the Vietnamese Mennonite Church in Philadelphia makes annual visits to southern Alabama to help with a summer camp.
