Sandra Perez, Immigration Program New YorkThe New York City Mennonite churches reflect the diversity of the area's melting pot nature. There are seventeen Mennonite churches, eight are Latino, six have a mixture of African Americans, Anglos and Latinos and one congregation is composed of Garifuna's originally from Belize and Haiti. MCC East Coast works alongside these churches in a number of ways. One important role is recruitment and placement of participants in the Summer Service Program. With the support and partnership of MCC East Coast, the New York City Council of Mennonite Churches established the New York Mennonite Immigration Program in 1998. The program provides high quality services at minimum fees by partnering with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Resettlement Program and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network Inc. Programs. Staff person Sandra Perez heads this effort. While technically not a part of MCC East Coast, The MCC United Nations Liaison Office, is also part of the larger MCC presence in the city. UN Office associate Kirk Harris is an MCC East Coast volunteer working in this office.
