Oglala Lakota Nation, South Dakota
Mennonite Central Committee's Oglala Lakota Nation unit has been in operation on the Pine Ridge Reservation since 1992. MCC has been involved with housing, youth, economic and peace building initiatives through churches and grassroots, tribal, and non-profit organizations. MCC evaluates all work at the Oglala Lakota Nation through the lenses of restorative justice, anti-racism, and respect for the sovereignty of the Lakota Nation. The Eagle family finished their 5 year term as Program Coordinators for the Oglala Lakota Nation unit in June of 2003. Their years of hard work and their commitment to the Lakota people are appreciated – they will be missed. In January 2004, Karissa Ortman Loewen and Carl Meyer arrived in Porcupine to serve as Program Coordinators. MCC’s work in the Oglala Lakota Nation is relationship based. Through trusting relationships, MCCers can learn how to best support the Lakota people in their struggle for a better life. Our goal is to be respectful guests by supporting the efforts of local partners rather than starting our own initiatives. In 2005, MCC Partners in Employment grants provided matching funds for four summer employment positions with community organizations, two positions for 4-5 months, and two full year positions. Job PostingsThe Oglala Lakota Nation Unit currently has two open service worker positions, for a co-Program Coordinator and a Decolonization/Dismantling Racism Organizer. Both positions begin October 2006.
