This book offers hope to families who have experienced suicide as the Carrs describe their own feelings and questions following their daughter-in-law’s suicidal death. Since suicide is relatively common among youth and since books about suicide from a Christian perspective are rare we have included it in this bibliography even though the people in the book are all adults.

Living When A Young Friend Commits Suicide
Boston: Beacon Press, 1999.
This 109-page book discusses many topics around suicide in very helpful ways. It includes questions people may ask about God but the writers are careful not to give definitive answers about God. Rather they suggest that the reader may need to talk to a clergy person with whom they feel comfortable.
O'Connell, David F.
Dual Disorders: Essentials for Assessment and Treatment
New York: Haworth Press, 1998.
Although this is a book written for professional people, congregational caregivers and parents may also find it helpful. The author describes the symptoms of the psychiatric disorders and the symptoms of chemical dependency and the treatment in a fairly readable fashion. This book is important because many youth who live with a mental illness turn to substance abuse to ease the pain.
